The way we work here is not too difficult. We start with an initial Idea….yours or ours.  From there, we complete the Concept with drawings to get the “Idea on Paper”, so that everyone agrees. This can take different amounts of time….depending on the size of the project. In the case of very Large projects, I sometimes even build a 3D Model to work out all the challenges in advance. The following example shows the process for a small project.

Computer Desk Project:

Here is a simple Computer Desk I recently built. First I sketch things out on the computer. Here I get all the design elements organized and make sure the piece matches the clients’ expectations and that we agree on what I’m building. In this case, I’m building an inexpensive  Birch plywood desk with a custom Resin coating. The color scheme is simple as well.

Once everyone is in agreement, I begin construction. I send pictures along the way of the progress. Again, in this case I am building a simple Plywood/Resin Computer Desk from Birch plywood. The finished top is a Custom Resin finish and gives the piece a nice marble-like finish that is both durable and attractive. The legs are three quarter plywood, butt jointed with a stylish taper. While I used Birch Plywood, I could have used an even less expensive wood because of the painted finish. The end faces or styles on the top are cut from poplar.

Finally the Custom Built Desk is Approved and delivered to it’s new home. It’s designed to make maximum use of a small space. I do all sorts of custom built furniture, but I saw this one as a simple piece…..albeit with an elegant design, as a nice subject for this second blog post. Note that the top is now completely smooth with no visible joints. This took four coats of epoxy to achieve, which also adds to the durability of the table. The end result is a piece of wood with the look and feel of Marble.
